Social Media and I are in a love-hate relationship
How Social Media can be good and bad all at the same time
Social Media and I are frenemies.
Yes, I said it! I know that I need social media to promote my blog and promote my podcast but let’s be real, sometimes social media can consume you when you’re not careful.
I know firsthand because it’s now 9 pm on a Monday night and I’m writing this when I should have had this done hours ago but social media got the best of me. Researching for my podcast turned into me posting something on Twitter and Facebook which I needed to do because I didn’t content batch this weekend. All because I got distracted by social media. Whether it was mindlessly scrolling or me getting into a debate that lasted 2 hours 😬 . I was hyper-focused on the conversation instead of what I should have been doing.
You’re probably wondering now “Ok Rachel so what are you going to do? You can’t leave social media so what’s next?”
Here’s a list of the things I’m going to do from now on to limit my social media intake:
Schedule social media posts ahead of time.
I can use facebook’s scheduler but I’ve realized that when I do this it makes me stay on Facebook more so instead I’m going to find an app that I can use to schedule all of my social media posts. I was using Crowdfire but it won’t let me schedule for my personal Facebook page only a business page and I don’t like that. I think I might try out Buffer again. For Instagram, I know buffer will work but it’s weird because you get a notification and then you can post the scheduled post. I wish it would be like facebook’s scheduler but I guess Meta doesn’t want to do that with IG anytime soon.Use Tweetdeck for Twitter
I started using Tweetdeck for Twitter and it has been a game changer. I can schedule my tweets there but also it makes it easier for commenting.Schedule certain times of the day for me to engage online.
I’m going to start setting a timer for 20 minutes per platform. This gives me plenty of time to engage with people whether it’s replying to comments on my posts or liking and commenting on other people’s posts. I shouldn’t need more time than that.
Let’s remember the golden rule:Nothing on social media is urgent!
Seriously y’all! I think a lot of us forget this. You don’t have to answer someone right away on social media unless it’s something time-sensitive like a giveaway or deadline. But being honest not many comments and replies are time-sensitive. They can wait until the next day.
Even though this blog post was written at a very odd time for me, it was a learned lesson as well. Like my ass is supposed to be going to bed in an hour and I messed up my entire bedtime routine because of this. Routines are important y’all! If you don’t have one make one! For real, it’s totally life-changing.
That’s it for me! Until next time loves!
Ciao! xo
The struggle with balancing social media and running a business is so real!
